We would like to draw your attention to a call for papers for a special issue to be published in the journal, Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena (MMNP). The open access special issue will address “Coronavirus: scientific insights and societal aspects” and, in view of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, will be editorially reviewed for quick publication.

The special issue is open for immediate submissions and you are asked to read the instructions to authors and submit via the MMNP website. We would like to remind you that since MMNP recently transitioned to a Subscribe to Open (S2O) model, authors may now publish in open access under a CC-BY licence, free of charge.

“We have invited contributions from colleagues working in this field, and also welcome submissions from the mathematical modelling community and beyond,” explains Vitaly Volpert, Editor-in-Chief of MMNP. “We encourage you to share this call for submissions with your networks. The timely availability of research is crucial to meeting and overcoming the ongoing challenges posed by this pandemic.”

Scope

The coronavirus pandemic has provoked numerous questions at all levels. It has also shown that modern society is extremely vulnerable to and unprepared for such events. A broad scientific and public discussion has therefore become necessary.

This issue will publish scientific papers in a broad range of topics related to coronavirus infection and the coronavirus pandemic, reports and data analysis, as well as more general prospective articles. In order to accelerate the publication of papers, the editorial board will decide which papers to accept without further peer review.

MMNP is an international, peer-reviewed journal publishing multi-disciplinary content on mathematical modelling. The scope of the journal includes applied mathematics and mathematical analysis in the context of its applications to real world problems.

First article published

“On a quarantine model of coronavirus infection and data analysis” by Vitaly Volpert, France and Russia, Malay Banerjee, India and Sergei Petrovskii, UK, is the first paper from this open access special issue and is now available. In their abstract, the authors state: “Analysis of the data in China and Korea shows that the peak of infection (maximum of daily cases) is reached about 10 days after the restricting measures are introduced. During this period of time, the growth rate of the total number of infected was gradually decreasing. However, the growth rate remains exponential in Italy. Arguably, it suggests that the introduced quarantine is not sufficient and stricter measures are needed.”
