EDP Sciences offers Science Publishing Masterclasses that harness expertise and specialist resources to help early career researchers and PhD students better understand scholarly publishing. Participants focus on writing and peer reviewing scientific articles as a way of developing and improving their technique.

Understanding the process of peer review and getting research published is daunting for young scientists. Our workshop gives the participants the opportunity to submit their draft articles to get them reviewed by their peers, using the collective intelligence of the group to help participants improve articles in preparation, and build up their writing skills.

In detail

A two-day workshop typically includes:

  • Writing and structuring articles
    including titles, abstracts, and figures
  • Peer-review
    reviewing articles of your peers using the customized submission system NESTOR for Masterclasses, and receiving constructive, confidential feedback on your own article
  • Input from scientific editors
    what they look for in papers, why papers are rejected
  • An overview of scholarly publishing
    including publishing strategies and processes, open science, and ethics
  • Marketing and promoting published articles
    including practical tips and resources

Previous masterclasses

The first Scientific Writing Masterclass was organised in partnership with the Learning Center of Paris-Saclay University and took place in February 2019.

This workshop gave me a full view of the world of scientific publishing and it opened my eyes on many things to take into consideration for my future writings.

Emergent Scientist

Emergent Scientist is an open access international scientific journal dedicated to a student authorship and readership, and to a lesser extent to teachers and researchers. Emergent Scientist is intended to provide students with accessible scientific material and to offer them a first publishing experience. Scientific Editors of Emergent Scientist are on hand to co-facilitate masterclasses, using the Emergent Scientist submission system and published material.

Video interviews

To support the masterclasses, EDP Sciences is producing a series of video interviews with scientific Editors. In these interviews, Editors give their advice to early career researchers, discuss the editorial process at their journal, and share common reasons for acceptance or rejection of articles.
