Publication Charges for Open Access Journals
EDP Sciences supports Open Access (OA) and the acceleration of science and as such publishes a range of Open Access and hybrid journals. To cover the costs involved in the publication of a journal article, journals charge a publication fee. This is paid either by the author or through grants from their institution or other founding bodies.
For some journals EDP Sciences uses the Liberty APC model whereby authors can choose their own fair price to publish an article in Open Access (OA). This allows authors who have a requirement to publish in a relevant OA journal the ability to publish regardless of their level of funding. For journals using the Liberty APC model, authors can select the amount that they will pay on acceptance of their article. For each journal the selectable amount ranges between 0€ and the full prize given in the table below.
Please note that APCs are not considered as submission fees.

Sources of funding for open access charges
There is an increasing number of institutions and organisations who provide funding to enable researchers to publish their articles in Open Access journals with publishers such as EDP Sciences. Examples of funding bodies include:
- Research Councils UK: RCUK Policy on Open Access
In order to help the implementation of the policy, the Research Councils introduced (from April 2013) a new funding mechanism - a block grant to universities and eligible research organisations to cover the cost of article processing charges (APCs).
- Wellcome Trust Open Access Funding
Wellcome Trust funded authors can access funds to cover open access publishing costs for research papers
- MIT Open Access Publishing Fund
Many institutions support their researchers by paying the open access fees as part of a membership model. Other institutions and/or societies support their researchers/members by covering fully or partially the publication charges. Several journals published in the EDP Open platform are sponsored in this way.

Charges and discounts for hybrid Open Access journals
EDP Sciences encourages and supports the publication of open access papers. With this respect, we offer an Open Access Option (OAO). It provides an option for authors to make their papers freely available to all interested readers (subscribers or non-subscribers) as soon as their article is published online, in exchange for payment of an Article Processing Charge (APC). By choosing this option, the author grants EDP Sciences a license to publish his/her article and identifies EDP Sciences as the original publisher. It gives any third party the right to use, reproduce and distribute the article, provided the original work is properly cited (cf. Creative Commons license).

EDP Sciences position regarding double dipping
EDP Sciences policy is not to charge subscribers for open access content (“double dipping”) and, when calculating subscription prices, only take into account content published under the subscription model. For this purpose, in 2018, EDP Sciences introduces price reductions for subscription journals: If 5% or more of the articles published in one of our subscription journals are open access articles, the subscription price for this journal will be proportionally reduced. The reduction applies to the following year in accordance with the number of issues and required expenditure for the previous volume.
EDP Sciences provides a waiver to authors based in any of the following countries, which were classified by the World Bank as Low-income economies or Lower-middle-income economies as of September 2014, and which have a 2013 gross domestic product of less than 200 billion US dollars (reference - World Bank 1st September 2014). List of countries.
For specific journals, the waiver policies are not applied.
