EDP Sciences is pleased to join 1445 other organisations and 14540 individuals supporting the Declaration on Research Assessment(DORA). The declaration “recognizes the need to improve the ways in which the outputs of scholarly research are evaluated” and “is a worldwide initiative covering all scholarly disciplines and all key stakeholders including funders, publishers, professional societies, institutions, and researchers.” See the full list of signatories.

DORA emerged from a meeting of editors and publishers during the Annual Meeting of The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) in San Francisco, 2012. One of their primary concerns was that “The Journal Impact Factor is frequently used as the primary parameter with which to compare the scientific output of individuals and institutions.” The group went on to develop a set of recommendations, referred to as the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment. “EDP Sciences is very pleased to sign the DORA declaration,” commented Claus Roll, Senior Publishing Editor. “As a society-owned publisher, EDP Sciences continually seeks new ways to support the scientific community. Impact factors are one, well-established indicator, but not necessarily the essential criterion for measuring the quality of a journal. We also take into consideration other metrics including usage and altmetrics to make sure we are aware of the full story around journal performance. Of course, the quality of our editorial boards and peer-review are also key indicators of high-quality content.”
