EDP Sciences accessibility statement
EDP Sciences is committed to making its websites accessible to all users, regardless of ability or technology. Accessibility is an ongoing priority, and we continuously work to identify and address barriers across our platforms, incorporating improvements as part of our regular development cycle.
Standards
EDP Sciences strives to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1 level AA) and the W3C standards for HTML, CSS and JavaScript, ensuring compatibility with current browsers and devices and adaptability to user needs, preferences and technologies.
Accessibility Conformance Report
An Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR), based on the VPAT® Version 2.5Rev, is available for the Vision4Press platform, detailing our conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA, Section 508, and EN 301 549. [Download the ACR in PDF format]
Remediation Roadmap
To complement our Accessibility Conformance Report, we have published a remediation roadmap detailing how we plan to address identified accessibility gaps. [Download the Remediation Roadmap in PDF format]
Formats and accessibility
HTML pages are optimized for modern browsers and devices with a responsive design.
PDF content is available without Digital Right Management (DRM) and can be opened with all PDF readers.
HTML and EPUB formats are structured through conversion from XML JATS (Journal Article Tag Suite) to maximise accessibility. Tables contain captions, header cells, and data cells.
The language of each page is defined, and language changes within content, such as titles and abstracts in a different language, are also marked up programmatically.
For articles published from 2020 onwards, mathematical equations are rendered using MathML, ensuring accessibility for assistive technologies.
You should be able :
- Change fonts, colors and contrast
- Zoom in, without loss of content or functionality
- Use text-to-speech or speech synthesis tools
- Navigate the platform using keyboard only
Known limitations
However some areas do not fully conform to the WCAG 2.1 standard (level AA).
- Older archive content reproduced in PDF from printed sources may not be fully readable by assistive software.
- For archive articles, certain accessibility features may not be fully implemented and mathematical equations in older articles are rendered as images only.
- Figures and images within articles are provided as authored and are not modified by the publisher.
- Some images within HTML content may lack alt text, though most include adjacent captions.
- Some video/audio content included as supplementary material in articles may not include captions or audio descriptions, as this depends on what the author submits.
- Some of our content in PDF has not been designed for accessibility, notably the older archive content reproduced in PDF format from original printed sources with OCR (optical character recognition), but not totally readable by alternate softwares.
