Mathematics Subscribe to Open programme
This web page describes the mathematics Subscribe to Open programme led by EDP Sciences and the French Société de Mathématiques Industrielles et Appliquées (SMAI). For general information about Subscribe to Open, please go to https://www.edpsciences.org/en/subscribe-to-open-s2o.
Journals included
The following journals are currently published in open access under the Subscribe to Open (S2O) model:
Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena
The first mathematics journal in the world to transition to open access using Subscribe to Open.
mmnp-journal.org
ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations
ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis
ESAIM: Probability and Statistics
RAIRO - Operations Research
RAIRO - Theoretical Informatics and Applications
All these journals are published by EDP Sciences in partnership with SMAI except for RAIRO – Theoretical Informatics and Applications which is published by EDP Sciences only. We are grateful to SMAI for helping to develop the S2O programme for these journals.

"The French Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics is extremely keen on supporting fair open access. This new cooperative model is very interesting because it gives mathematicians and maths libraries an important role in keeping the quality of the scientific production at a very high level, while the expertise of the publisher remains essential. SMAI and EDP Sciences have been working together for more than 10 years, and it was completely natural to take this step forward together." Amandine Véber, Director of Publications, SMAI.
“In this first year of transition, we felt that supporting equitable open access through S2O merits pressing ahead with the transition even if all the financial criteria are not strictly met. Our mathematics journals still require support from institutional subscribers to remain in open access and we encourage libraries to join our S2O programme as soon as they can.” Agnès Henri, Managing Director, EDP Sciences.
Open Math through S2O
EDP Sciences (EDPS) in collaboration with the French learned society SMAI, EMS Press (EMS) and Mathematical Science Publishers (MSP) are the first three publishers to transition mathematics journals from gated to open access under the Subscribe to Open model (S2O). In 2022, they initiated a partnership to share best practices and resources and to promote the S2O model among the community of mathematics researchers and libraries. More information

We are pleased to share the first annual report relating to the Subscribe to Open (S2O) programme in mathematics. The report includes details of the evolution of subscription prices, renewal targets, publication costs and other key measures. More information is available to interested libraries on request.

Subscribers and supporters
We are grateful for the following support in relation to the EDP Sciences-SMAI Subscribe to Open programme:
Subscribers
We would like to thank our historical subscribers who support the transition of the maths journals to open access by maintaining their subscription year after year. New subscribers are welcome to join the programme at any time.
The National Open Access Agreement in France has allowed French researchers to publish in open access in EDP Sciences’ journals since 2017. The parties to the Agreement particularly support the transition of journals to full open access under the Subscribe to Open model.

Testimonials
“At Research4Life we have been focusing more and more on helping our users to navigate the different Open Access business models in order to achieve greater exposure for their research. We have found that many authors from Research4Life countries don’t submit their research to Gold OA journals because they don’t realise that the publication charge would probably be waived, so we have published some guidelines on how to make APC waiver policies clearer and more accessible. In the case of the Subscribe-to-Open model there will be no APCs for accepted manuscripts. As this applies to all submissions, even those from institutions without an S2O subscription, the Subscribe-to-Open model is a very attractive solution for Research4Life authors because they don’t even have to worry about asking for a fee waiver.” Andrea Powell, STM Outreach Director and Publisher Coordinator, Research4Life
