During the 8th EPS Young Minds Leadership Meeting, Anne Ruimy, senior publisher at EDP Sciences, delivered a 1-hour scientific writing workshop to 40 representatives of EPS Young Minds sections. The EPS Young Minds Project is an international network of young researchers involved with promoting science among local communities. The meeting took place at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Lightin Erlangen, Germany.

The interactive workshop focused on writing effective abstracts, and used unpublished abstracts submitted by the participants themselves as material to work on their scientific writing skills. The participants, representatives of 20 Young Minds sections from Europe and beyond, were PhD and Masters’ students in physics who overall had little prior experience of publishing in academic journals.

During the workshop, Anne also presented a €500 “Best Activity Award” on behalf of EPL journal. This award recognized the two newly formed Young Minds sections of Yerevan and Artsakh (Armenia) for extraordinary work to promote science in difficult economic conditions.

EDP Sciences now offers masterclasses on scientific writing for young researchers and PhD students. Workshops can be tailored to the needs of the institution: from a 1-hour focused session to a 2-day extended workshop. The workshops are delivered by experienced senior publishers from EDP Sciences with the support of senior editors representing journals from across the scientific spectrum.
