4open is pleased to introduce the fifth free article in its ‘Key Summaries’ series. This ‘Key Summary’ offers an easy to understand description of an article published in 4open by researchers led by Professor George Anogeianakis. The article describes how using an algorithm to predict surgery success can allow surgeons to tailor medical procedures for individual patients to maximise the chances of success.

‘Key Summaries’ use non-technical language to help non-experts and other interested groups understand, in this instance, why scientists have turned to neural networks (computing systems based on biological neural systems) to develop an algorithm that can predict whether laser eye surgery will be successful in a given patient and how effective this use of artificial intelligence may be.

“Before many medical procedures, a doctor can give a patient a general idea of the chances of success. However, these success rates are often based on the general population and typically don’t reflect an individual patient’s chances.”
