We are pleased to share the Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) Subscribe to Open (S2O) 2022 Transparency Report. This is the first transparency report and provides a range of information related to the A&A Subscribe to Open program including:

- Background information on open access in astronomy

- Financial structure of A&A

- Subscriptions information

- Article Processing Charges prior to the OA transition

- Open access publication prior to the OA transition

- Publication statistics and costs

- Financial impact of S2O for the publisher

As advocates of open science, we support the principle of transparency, including financial transparency. We follow FAIR data guidelines to be “as open as possible and as closed as necessary” when deciding which information to include. We plan to update and publish the report every year. While the current report only includes data related to the publisher’s revenue and costs, future reports should also include information on editorial statistics, revenue and costs.

Earlier this year, we announced several new subscriber benefits for 2023 in response to community feedback on A&A’s S2O program (including an “Early-Bird” subscription discount; reserved access to accepted articles ahead of publication; a discount on “page charges” for authors of subscribing institutions). Together with the formal implementation of a waiverfor Group A Research4Life authors, the 2022 Transparency Report brings A&A’s first year in full open access to a fitting end.

About Subscribe to Open (S2O)

Subscribe to Open is a transformative model first introduced by Annual Reviews and endorsed by cOAlition S. It aims to transition subscription journals to open access, without charging authors to publish, by leveraging existing library subscriptions. The A&A S2O model is a bit more complex than for other S2O journals published by EDP Sciences due to its financial structure.
