EDP Sciences updates its policy on AI and ethics
- Details
EDP Sciences has updated its policy on Artificial Intelligence and Ethics, setting out clear principles for the responsible use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies across all stages of the publishing process.
The updated policy, now part of EDP Sciences’ Publishing Policies & Ethics, provides practical guidance for authors, reviewers, and editors while reinforcing the publisher’s commitment to integrity, transparency, and human accountability in scientific publishing. It distinguishes between acceptable uses of AI, for example, language editing under human supervision, and those that are prohibited, such as the use of generative AI for creating images or conducting confidential peer reviews.
For authors, the policy requires that any use of AI tools in the writing process be fully disclosed at submission, including the tool and its purpose, to support openness and trust. AI tools cannot be credited as authors, and authors remain solely responsible for the content of their work. The policy also makes clear that AI-generated or modified images and figures are not permitted, except when AI forms part of the research methodology and is described transparently.
For reviewers and editors, the policy states the importance of confidentiality and expert human judgement. Manuscripts and review reports must never be uploaded to generative AI tools, and peer review remains a human-led process grounded in trust and rigour.
EDP Sciences recognises that AI technologies continue to evolve rapidly. In line with COPE’s position statement and international best practice, this policy will be reviewed and updated regularly to reflect new developments in technology and regulation.
By setting clear boundaries for the use of AI and AI-assisted technologies, EDP Sciences aims to support responsible innovation while protecting the reliability and credibility of the scientific record.
