EDP Sciences is pleased to announce that the Société Française d’Astronomie et d’Astrophysique (SF2A) has awarded its 2015 Thesis Awards to Quentin Kral for his thesis entitled “Study of debris discs with a new generation numerical model” that he defended at LESIA (Paris Observatory).

This award is sponsored by EDP sciences and rewards a young doctor in Astrophysics.

EDP Sciences is pleased to sponsor the SF2A days for many years. This year, the days will take place in the University of Paul Sabatier, in Toulouse, from 3 to 6 June. We will be delighted to announce in the near future, the winner of the SF2A 2015 Thesis Awards.

Created in 2011, the SF2A Thesis Award is given every year to a young researcher in astrophysics whose particularly remarkable work deserves to be recognized.

EDP Sciences is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with Portico to provide a permanent archive of the e-content for many of their key journals. Through this agreement, institutions participating in Portico’s E-Journal Preservation Service will be assured continued access to EDP Sciences content for generations of their scholars in the future.

Current data will be sent to Portico as soon as the e-journal is published, and a full list of the journals committed to the Portico archive is available at http://www.portico.org/digital-preservation/who-participates-in-portico/participating-publishers/edp.

EDP Sciences wishes to warmly congratulate Ms Wiebke Drenckhan (affiliated with the Laboratory for Solid State Physics, in Orsay) for her CNRS Bronze Medal.

The CNRS Bronze Medal awards in recognition of a researcher's initial studies, which gives him the status of talented specialist in its field. With this medal CNRS wants to encourage the researcher to continue his commitment to an already fruitful research.

Wiebke Drenckhan, who is also a talented artist thanks to her humoristic drawings, has been working on several science popularization books published by EDP Sciences, as an illustrator (Café, crème, savon et Cie ; Textiles, parfums, bijoux et Cie ; Physics in Daily Life…)

We wish her the best for her future works.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2013 was awarded jointly to James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof for their discoveries of machinery regulating vesicle traffic, a major transport system in our cells: each of the laureates has respectively elucidated a key point of the machinery regulating vesicle traffic.

Biologie Aujourd’hui will publish in its forthcoming issue a French version of the three 2013 Nobel Conferences (Cell Biology), that these researchers presented during the 2014 Claude Bernard Day. The topics are the following:

  • The principle of membrane fusion in the cell, James Edward Rothman
  • The genes and proteins that control the secretion pathway, Randy W. Schekman
  • The molecular machinery of neurotransmitter secretion, Thomas C. Südhof
