“Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion”

“Science should not be a luxury and knowledge should not be a commodity, it should be a basic human right.” – Jack Andraka, Open Access Week 2014

COVID-19 has undoubtedly shone a light on the need for accessible research. As the pandemic continues and researchers work hard to enhance the world’s knowledge of the virus, open access research offers an opportunity to build a more equitable system of knowledge sharing. Open Access Week 2020 celebrates the theme of “Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion” and we are pleased to reflect briefly on some steps we have taken which support this theme.

Paris, France, 14 October 2020: EDP Sciences is pleased to announce that Mechanics & Industry, the official journal of the Association Française de Mécanique (AFM), will publish all articles open access from January 2021. M&I has been co-published in English with EDP Sciences since 2004 and is widely recognised and appreciated in its field.

EDP Sciences is delighted to learn that this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez. Penrose receives half the prize "for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity" and Genzel and Ghez jointly receive half the prize "for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy".

The Journal of Space Weather and Space Climate (JSWSC) was established as an open access journal at the end of 2010 and is celebrating a successful first decade. The journal has come a long way since its inception and there is much of which to be proud and to give confidence as JSWSC moves into its second decade as a champion of open science and an integral part of the European space weather community.

Following the successful launch of a series of masterclasses on scientific writing for PhD students and young researchers in February 2019, the Lumen Learning Center of Université Paris-Saclay and EDP Sciences are pleased to host the third scientific writing masterclass, taking place online 12-13 October 2020.

“All our knowledge has been built communally; there would be no astrophysics, there would be no history, there would not even be language, if man were a solitary animal. What follows? It follows that we must be able to rely on other people; we must be able to trust their word.” (Jacob Bronowski, The Sense of Human Dignity)

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect a large proportion of the globe, it is more important than ever for the public, policymakers, and researchers to be able to trust in scientific output. Peer Review Week 2020 is celebrating its sixth year with a focus on ‘Trust in Peer Review’. We are pleased to support its aims of emphasizing the central role peer review plays in scholarly communication; showcasing the work of editors and reviewers; sharing research and advancing best practices; and highlighting the latest innovation and applications.

Congratulations to Prof. Nelson Maculan, co-Editor-in-Chief of RAIRO - Operations Research who has recently been elected a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). To put this in context, “INFORMS Fellows are examples of outstanding lifetime achievement in operations research and the management sciences. They have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments and made significant contributions to the advancement of OR/MS over a period of time.” (INFORMS) This honour is reserved for a few select members with a total of just twelve members being elected this year.

Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A), published by EDP Sciences, has published a special feature on the results from the ESA Planck mission, based on data released by ESA and the Planck Collaboration in July 2018. The Planck mission was dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution by mapping the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation.

VCM aims to provide a forum for better promotion of cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and more effective cancer treatments

Paris, France, 17 September 2020: We are pleased to announce the launch of a new open access journal, Visualized Cancer Medicine (VCM). VCM is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal, which publishes advances in basic, translational, and clinical studies on cancer biology, cancer prevention, cancer screening and diagnosis, cancer treatments, and cancer patient rehabilitation, with an emphasis on videos.

As publishers of Astronomy & Astrophysics, EDP Sciences is very pleased to learn that Françoise Combes, one of the associate editors of Astronomy & Astrophysics, has been awarded the CNRS 2020 Gold Medal. Françoise is professor at the Collège de France and chair in “Galaxies and Cosmology”. She is also an astrophysicist at the Paris Observatory and a member of the Academy of Sciences.
